CargoNet is Norway’s largest rail freight carrier and is part of the Vy Group.
Reducing the carbon footprint of transportation is an important political goal. We aim to be part of the future solution for more sustainable freight transport, with skilled employees and leaders who make it easy and safe for our customers to choose environmentally friendly options.
CargoNet has an annual turnover of around 1.2 billion kroner. We operate freight terminals all over Norway, and our freight trains transport everything from food and mail to timber, ore, and aviation fuel. CargoNet helps keep society running!
Until CargoNet was established as a limited company on January 1, 2002, we were known as NSB Gods and were a division of NSB. The very origin of railway construction in Norway in the mid-1800s was timber transport, so it is safe to say we build on a 170-year history.
Competition with larger and more efficient trucks during the 1950s and 1960s led to a series of restructurings in the industry, including the establishment of Linjegods in 1972. Linjegods was a collaboration between NSB, the Bus Owners’ Association, and the Freight Center, which operated the largest terminals outside the NSB system.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, NSB Gods increasingly focused on combined transport, and in 1992, NSB Gods started Europe’s longest freight train connection between Oslo and Narvik, through Sweden. From 2002 to 2010, Swedish Green Cargo owned 45 % of CargoNet, which has since been wholly owned by NSB/Vy.
